Is Finnish Really Difficult to Learn?
If you've ever heard that Finnish is one of the world's hardest languages, you're not alone. Many people feel intimidated before they even start. But is Finnish really as difficult as people say? The answer is both yes and no.
Why Do People Think Finnish Is Difficult?
Finnish is very different from English and many other European languages.
For example:
It doesn't use grammatical gender (there is no "he" or "she" distinction).
It has around 15 grammatical cases.
The vocabulary is mostly unrelated to English.
Verbs change depending on the subject and tense.
At first glance, this can seem overwhelming.
The Good News: Finnish Is Surprisingly Logical
Unlike English, Finnish follows consistent rules. Once you learn a grammar rule, it usually works without many exceptions.
For example:
Words are pronounced exactly as they are written.
Every letter has one main pronunciation.
Verb conjugation follows clear patterns.
Grammar is based on rules rather than memorization.
Many of my students tell me that Finnish becomes much easier once they understand how the language works.
There Is No "Perfect" Way to Learn Finnish
One thing I've learned from teaching Finnish is that every learner is different. Some students enjoy understanding grammar first. They want to know why something is correct before they start speaking. Building a strong grammar foundation gives them confidence.
Other students prefer the opposite approach. They start speaking immediately, make mistakes, and learn naturally through conversation. That works well for them too.
Neither learning style is right or wrong.
Personally, I believe the most balanced approach is to develop grammar, vocabulary, listening, and speaking together. But the balance isn't the same for everyone. Some learners need more structure. Others need more conversation. My role as a teacher isn't to force every student into the same method.
It's to understand how each student learns best and adapt my lessons accordingly.
The Most Important Thing Is Consistency
People often ask me,
"How many hours should I study?"
In my experience, studying a little every week is much more effective than studying intensively once in a while. Even 15–30 minutes a day can make a big difference when you study consistently. Language learning is a marathon, not a sprint.
Common Mistakes Beginners Make
Here are some mistakes I often see:
1. Trying to learn everything at once
Finnish grammar is extensive. You don't need to master everything before you can communicate. Start with the basics and build your knowledge step by step.
2. Translating everything from English
Finnish has its own way of expressing ideas. Instead of translating word for word, learn natural Finnish expressions.
3. Being afraid of making mistakes
Making mistakes is an essential part of learning. Every mistake teaches you something new, and my online lesson is a safe place to make mistakes.
